OCR Console: Integration of text and barcode recognition into your applications without programming effort

Efficient conversion of business-critical documents

Convert image documents and PDF files into editable digital formats, directly from a scanner or from image files. Save them in a multitude of formats: DOCX, PDF, XML and many more.  Ready for editing, sharing and archiving.

Batch conversion with automatic document separation

Divide batches of scanned, multi-page documents into individual documents by the number of pages or by barcodes or separation words. The ideal preparation for later archiving.

Fully automatic, embeddable processing without interaction

Add OCR functionality to existing business solutions. Automatically call parameterised processes from within your document workflow. Ideal for unattended processing on servers and within batch scripts.

Usage

OCR Console is a command line program without any graphical user interface. Instead, you use the textual input of a command line window. To integrate the applications into your workflow no changes to your software are necessary in most cases. All features can be used without any programming knowledge.

    • Open the command line prompt (e.g. with Windows key  + R, then enter “cmd” and press Return).
    • Start the application by entering its name (ocrcon).
    • Attach “/?” after the program name to get a list of all available commands.
    • Use the commands from this list to instruct the program.
    • The integration of the program into your workflow can be made event-driven.
    • Many standard applications offer ways to call third-party programs at a certain moment or with a certain event.
    • After receiving and storing a file or any other event within your IT solution you can call OCR Console and process that document.
    • If your current business application does not support the integration of third-party software there are additional, free tools for monitoring folders and calling OCR Console at certain events.
    • To configure a scanner connection you call the program once with the parameter /wizard.
    • A short dialog will guide you through the scanner configuration.
    • From then on, the scanner can be controlled without any further user interaction.
Download & Licensing

OCR Console will be delivered and installed by download. Before you can use it productively the program must be activated once. This requires an Internet connection on the same or another computer. The license file shipped with the program and activated during the installation will determine its feature set.

Application scenarios

Current state:

  • Your web portal only allows to upload editable documents for further processing.

Problem:

  • Your users want to upload scanned documents or images taken with smartphones.

Solution:

  • Your web service recognises it is dealing with an image and calls OCR Console to convert the transmitted file into a searchable PDF document.
  • After the conversion, your web service can continue as if the user had uploaded a PDF file.

ocrcon "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\uploads\image.jpg" "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\uploads\image.pdf"

Current state:

  • Your application shows image files that contain information important for your users.

Problem:

  • The users don’t want to copy values like the date, invoice total, customer number or other important strings.

Solution:

  • Your application uses the mouse ccordinates to define a recognition area for OCR Console.
  • After the conversion, your program opens the resulting text file and copies its contents into the clipboard or the appropriate text box.

ocrcon "C:\Image\Invoice.jpg" C:\Temp\Invoice.txt /zone 200,1000,800,1200

Current state:

  • Many multi-page documents have to be scanned for further processing or archival.
  • Different documents are in the same scanning batch.

Problem:

  • To store the documents in individual files they have to be separated manually and scanned one by one.

Solution:

  • The user puts the entire batch into the scanner and calls a pre-defined batch file controlling the correct separation.
  • If the number of pages is the same for each document you specify the number of pages after which a new document is to be created.

ocrcon /scan C:\Archive\*.pdf /count 8

  • For heterogenous documents, you put reusable separation sheets with a barcode or unique key word between the documents.

ocrcon /scan C:\Archive\*.pdf /separator "SeparationPage"

Current state:

  • Your system processes documents the names of which you cannot influence.

Problem:

  • Assigning documents within your system is complicated as the documents are not searchable and the file names do not bear any meaningful meta information.

Solution:

  • Rename the image file according to a barcode value or the textual contents of a certain area.
  • If input and output formats are the same the file contents will not be modified but only renamed.
